on a typeset manuscript, following copyediting. Proofreading is the final stage in editing, and should never be considered as a first step following writing. In the past, a proofreader would mark corrections in red ink on a hard copy of the manuscript using standard proofreading marks. Proofreading can now be done on typeset electronic files using markup tools in Adobe® Acrobat®, for example. Take a look at editing definitions and rate guidelines from the following resources: Copyediting is a mandatory step prior to proofreading. We will respectfully decline to proofread text that has not been copyedited. We proofread electronic documents using the Text Edits tool in Adobe® Acrobat®. You receive files via email with suggested changes shown. You must input changes to the original file on your end, since PDF documents don't offer the ability to accept or reject changes.
